Courseware, Blackboard, Flexible learning
Utilising educational and information technologies, Griffith Flexible Learning Services provides comprehensive development, delivery and management systems for flexible learning solutions. The use of Web technology is a core element in the delivery of flexible learning at Griffith University, meeting many of the dimensions of flexibility - access (the opportunity to participate), timing and duration, location of study and learning support.
To advance flexible learning at Griffith University a new courseware delivery system to service the on-line components of Flexible Learning courses was introduced for the start of the 2001 academic year. The system software is based on one of the leading platforms in the courseware delivery arena Blackboard 5.0 and was tailored to the needs of the University teaching and learning community. The Blackboard E-Learning platform encompasses a courseware management system, customisable institution-wide portal, on-line campus communities and an advanced architecture allowing integration of multiple administrative systems. This enables students to access the university, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from administrative functions such as enrolment to the delivery of course materials and the provision of electronic communications.
Several technical hurdles were overcome to achieve a successful deployment of Blackboard. The large bank of existing on-line Flexible Learning content was migrated into the new environment using locally developed tools. Integration of the courseware management software with the University's administrative systems used a data snapshot approach in the first phase, and the second phase will be a full integration between Blackboard and PeopleSoft.
Equally important was managing the change across a large academic and student population. A training plan was developed to add to existing professional development, and support services provided. Workshop sessions were supported by customised staff and student manuals. The technology and policy to enable academic staff to directly develop and maintain their on-line materials is also being examined.
