Tutorial title: Intelligent Agents, the Internet and Electronic Commerce: Opportunities and Applications (half day - morning)

Presenter: San Murugesan, School of Multimedia and Information Technology, Southern Cross University, smurugesan@scu.edu.au

Outline: Intelligent agents execute tasks on behalf of an individual or organisation. They are goal-oriented, autonomous, and may meet and interact with other agents. They have the potential to play key roles in building and supporting a number of applications on the Internet and facilitating electronic commerce.

They can retrieve, analyse, integrate and evaluate information obtained online from heterogeneous information sources, and present information tailored to individual's needs and preferences. They promise to reduce the time to discover information and improve quality of information.

Intelligent agents are also attractive to support many tasks encountered in e-commerce transactions by acting on behalf of customers, businesses and e-market participants. They can find suitable products/services, compare prices, bargain and negotiate deals, take part in online auctions, act as virtual human sales agents interacting with customers and provide context-driven information.

This tutorial will present an overview of practical applications of agents on the Web and e-commerce domain and portray emerging trends in this area growing importance. It will introduce intelligent agents and present various applications with real-world. It will also discuss some of the issues surrounding these applications and explore the new opportunities and emerging trends in mobile applications area.
This tutorial will be of interest to Web and e-commerce system developers, computing and e-business professionals and researchers. They will be able to get an insight into the promise of intelligent agents and their current and next-generation applications.

Biography: San Murugesan is a Professor in the School of Multimedia and Information Technology, Southern Cross University (from 2002). During 1993 - 2001, he worked at the University of Western Sydney (UWS), where his colleagues and he led the efforts in identifying and developing the field of Web Engineering. He has about 30 years experience in working in academia, research institutions and industry. His current interests include: Web engineering, e-business, intelligent agents, Web personalisation and information retrieval.

He served as co-chair of the AAAI Spring Symposium on Intelligent Agents in Cyberspace, Stanford University, 1999, and International Workshop on Intelligent Agents on the Internet and Web, Mexico City, 1998. He and his colleagues organised the series of the Workshops on Web Engineering held in conjunction with World Wide Web conference (1998-2001) and International Conference on Software Engineering (1999, 2000, 2002).

He is a co-guest editor of the special issues of IEEE Multimedia on Web Engineering, Part 1 and 2 (Jan 2001 and April 2001) and a co-editor of the book, Web Engineering Managing the Diversity and Complexity of Web Application Development, Springer Verlag, 2001.

San, an invited speaker at earlier AusWeb and other international conferences and professional meetings, has presented many tutorials and short courses
