Workshop title: Designing Effective and Efficient Homepages

Outline: The first part of this workshop will familiarise participants with research findings that identify the characteristics and important issues relevant to the design and maintenance of efficient and effective Web sites. The focus will be on homepage and upper level page design and navigation for Web sites that represent the first point of contact for large organisations such as universities and schools, government departments and private organisations. During the second part of the workshop attendees will design and setup a hypothetical Web site using the principles and skills taught earlier in the day as well critique a range of other selected Web sites.

Biography: Karey holds a B.Bus (hons) degree with majors in computing, business management and marketing. He has a wide range of industry experience as a Web site designer, project manager and educational technologist (standards development and deployment systems for Web-based courses). He is currently undertaking post-graduate research into interface design and navigational systems with particular reference to educational Web sites.
