Abstract
The School of Finance and Applied Statistics, Faculty of Economics, approched
Scholarly Technology Services with a request for assistance to create online streaming
multimedia versions of lecture material.
Typically a lecture in this program is built around a set of PowerPoint slides
and the lecturer weaves a lecture presentation around these slides. The
lecture might use a spiral technique in that a basic concept might be traversed
several times. Points are reiterated and the presentation may be discursive
rather than being concise.
The experiment proposed did not involve the direct capture to digital format of
the lecture presentation (audio and video). Rather, PowerPoint slides are
combined with more concise
commentary prepared by the lecturer, which provides the essentials and a summary.
This "interview" version of the lecture is convenient to create and is made available
to students as a supplement or as an alternative to the conventional lecture.
Collected together these interviews form the basis of a streaming multi-media
publication of the course.
Real Networks technology was selected as the streaming technology of choice for
this project due to a number of factors including:
- Player compatibility across all
major platforms
- Excellent compression methods
and low bandwidth usage for remote users
- Flexibility to use and combine
different media formats and types
