Cairns seminar will explore Law's digital horizons

A special seminar to be held after the Sixth Australian World Wide Web Conference (AusWeb2K - http://ausweb.scu.edu.au) in Cairns will provide a rare opportunity to discuss key issues concerning the future of electronic commerce in such key areas as taxation, the law and E-health.

Ausweb2K, running from 12-17 June 2000, is Australia's premier annual event for Web developers and users. As well as a lineup of notable overseas and Australian speakers it will feature the one-day seminar 'Digital Horizons: Law & Business in the Digital Environment' planned by Law staff from Southern Cross University, the conference host.

'Digital Horizons' is sponsored by several leading law firms, Queensland Health and the Australian Taxation Office. It runs on Saturday, 17 June and costs $145.00. Associate Professor Brian Fitzgerald, Head of SCU's School of Law and Justice, said professionals who would benefit included lawyers, accountants, health professionals, IT industry professionals, academics, government officers and e-business enterprise managers.

Prof. Fitzgerald is co-editor of the cyberlaw book Going Digital 2000:

Legal Issues for E Commerce, Software and the Internet, launched recently in Sydney by High Court Justice Michael Kirby, The book will be launched in Queensland by the State Attorney-General, Hon. Matt Foley, at Parliament House, Brisbane on Wednesday, 31 May.

Digital Horizons features sessions on Propertising Information, the Future of the Internet, Taxation and the Digital Environment and a range of legal and health issues relating to the provision of E-Health. Speakers will include:

AusWeb2K offers top speakers and workshops across a broad range of technical, e-commerce, educational and business fields. Participants can hear visiting keynote speakers such as the World Wide Web Consortium's Prof. Bob Hopgood who recently received Britain's first-ever OBE for computer science, San Francisco's Bob Futernick on using technology to manage gallery collections, Anthony Rowley of the highly successful Tasmania Business Online and Paul McKey, of NextEd Ltd, which designs global online education systems.
