Strategic Internet Planning

Connectivity for staff

This could be through a local Internet Service provider or via a corporate wide connection. If you decide on the latter you would allow all staff to have access, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This would be like a university's access policy. This should be the goal of the company - totally connectivity to allow for fully informed and trusted staff. Thinks of how you allow your staff telephone access and follow similar guidelines.

Develop a Web Page

Develop a web site for your company as quickly as possible. Make it an attractive site - use outside consultants if necessary. Develop a team who can lead and coordinate your Internet presence. This is called a SPIDER team - Strategic Planning of Internet Dissemination, Evaluation and Review. (Lanfear, 1995).

Promote your site

Be aware that your site needs to be constantly updated and must attract people back to it. In the Internet tradition try to give something back to the internet community.

Use Intranets

Intranets run on open TCP/IP networks and enable companies to use the same type of servers and browsers used in the World Wide Web for internal applications distributed over the corporate LAN.

Use the Internet for Business Process Integration

Genentech, a US, company uses the Web for its online employee handbook. The School of Computing Sciences at the University of Technology uses the Web as a means for allowing staff to report hardware and software problems online.

Use the Internet for Business Transformation

As usage of the WWW grows so does user functionality and ease of use. Users can click and point to retrieve information from existing company databases.
