Abstract

The growth of the World Wide Web as a medium for distributing and presenting information promises to change the way we communicate and do business with others across the globe. This claim has recently been matched by the claims about what the intranet can do for the organisation.

The technology for intranets have been around for a while. This paper describes the use of intranet applications within the DSTC for the last year. We created our own intranet applications using in-house skills and inexpensive, commonly available tools. A major benefit of building our own applications was that they could be customised for our needs, and having the sources allowed us to use them in unexpected ways.

This article describes how the World Wide Web can be used as a tool for improving the information infrastructure within an organisation. These benefits are available today in intranets, rather than waiting for the yet to be realised future applications of the Web.
