Tourists or Terrorists? Tourism's Takeover of the Internet
Paul Weeks pweeks@scu.edu.au
Paul Weeks says about himself:
I currently lecture in Hotel and Accommodation management at the Centre
for
Tourism, Southern Cross University.
My interest in the Internet, and
specifially in the WWW has really be 'by default' - if colleagues have a
computer problem "who're you gonna call"...usually me. So, it's
fallen to
me to attempt to keep up with the Jones (or should that be Debrecenys and
Ellises :) ) and educate colleague in the intricacies and excitement of
the 'Net. I started thinking about research in this area after contacting
a
few service providers (mainly in Europe and the US) curious to know the
level of interest from hotels and accommodation sector establishments. From
here it has grown into a discussion on conversion rates for properties
marketing their wares on the 'Net.
Paul says about the paper:
"It looks at the incidence of Net usage by a variety of tourism related
sectors; while the list of businesses using the Web is becoming seemingly
endless, there are some areas that are cornering the Web market, and this
is tourism related industries. The interesting thing, for me, is what these
organisations hope to gain from running 'brochures' on the Net. Many are
just that - a brochure with pictures and little else. Others have one giant
picture and little else. Others, however, have a range of products and
services accessible from their Web site. Some of these will be covered in
the paper as well as a couple of cases from companies that have been doing
business on the WWW for some time."
