Going On-Line: The Case Of The Armidale TIC

Paul Weeks pweeks@scu.edu.au Desley Williams

Paul Weeks says about himself:
I currently lecture in Hotel and Accommodation management at the Centre for
Tourism
, Southern Cross University. My interest in the Internet, and
specifially in the WWW has really be 'by default' - if colleagues have a
computer problem "who're you gonna call"...usually me. So, it's fallen to
me to attempt to keep up with the Jones (or should that be Debrecenys and
Ellises :) ) and educate colleague in the intricacies and excitement of
the 'Net. I started thinking about research in this area after contacting a
few service providers (mainly in Europe and the US) curious to know the
level of interest from hotels and accommodation sector establishments. From
here it has grown into a discussion on conversion rates for properties
marketing their wares on the 'Net.

Desley Williams:
I have just about completed by Bachelor of Business (Tourism) degree at
Southern Cross Uni. It's been quite a struggle, being both a parent and, at
time, an external student. This particular assignment interested me as I'm
an Armidale person and it seemed that interesting technologicval thinkgs
were about to happen in Armidale; especially through the university. I also
worked at the Visitors Centre as part of my Internship, so the two tied in
quite nicely for the study I wanted to do.

Paul says about the Poster:
"It examines a case study of one tourist organisation and it attempt to be
dragged (screaming?) into the current techno-age. While the case is
Australian-specific, there are broader implications for both tourism
related smaller organisations as well as other small businesses (I notice
that Paul Cragg in his poster, "WWW Adoption by Small Firms: Research in
progress
" is interested in the area of small business). The results from
the study, conducted by a third year B. Bus (Tourism) student as a final
project assignment, provides for interesting reading."
