Lessons Learned in Publishing an Electronic Journal

Abstract

Publication of academic journals on the World Wide Web is rapidly increasing. This has enormous implications for publishers, libraries, contributors and readers. Monash University has assisted a small publisher, the Australian Association for Engineering Education, to publish the fully refereed Australasian Journal of Engineering Education on the Web. A few difficulties were observed in establishing a publishing process in the new medium. These would be alleviated by expanding the publishing team to include an expert in hypertext or instructional design skills. This individual could also be responsible for training the team, the contributors and the editing staff in the basic concepts of hypertext, graphics and the limitations and advantages of the Web as a publishing medium.
