Linking the data to develop knowledge: A neglected part of developing WEB-based university resources

Cristopher Brack Cris.Brack@anu.edu.au

Cris says about himself and his paper:
"I started my career in the world of Decision Support Systems or Management
Information Systems in the mid-1980s when I developed programs to help in
forest management. In 1992 I completed a PhD where I used Artificial
Intelligence to bring together qualitative and quantitative information
from a range of disciplines to help managers see the "big picture"; learn
more about their management situation; and make better decisions. I used a
lot of "Game Playing" and "Expert System" theory in this research, so I can
claim to have a PhD in games!

I am using a similar philosophy in the development of my WEB-based teaching
materials. Infomration from a variety of sources are linked to help
students gain an appreciation of the whole problem. I think I have been
quite successful in this process because students are exploring the
resources - not simply reading the next topic. Professionals outside the
University environment are also accessing this "textbook" to aid in their
problem solving duties. I think that the WEB has a way to go before it
fulfills its potential to promote learning by promoting intelligent links
and enhancing an exploration of the whole universe!"
