Integrating the Web and the teaching of technology: Cases across two universities

John Eklund, j.eklund@UTS.edu.au Peter Eklund

John says about his paper:
The idea for the work in this paper came when my brother Peter, an S/L in
Computer Science at Adelaide, rang me to ask what he could do as the new
co-ordinator of a non-technical, introductory course in computer literacy
that didn't involve delivering a lot of "watered down" content in a
traditional manner. We decided that structuring a student-centred approach,
using the web and teaching about the web would acheive many of the course
objectives and better allow for a range of prior experiences that students
may have had. I followed suite with my graduate students taking the DipEd
method in Computing Studies at Sydney Uni. We would offer similar content
and teaching methodology and compare our experiences. We wanted to answer
questions like: Can student-centered approaches in this context produce
desirable learning outcomes? Does the Web have a particular part to play in
delivering such courses? How can the web be integrated into the teaching of
technology courses and what are the implications? Is there a difference
between the more experienced students and the novices in learning with and
about the web? What evaluation methods are appropriate?
Our experience gave us the answer that there is something special about
using the Web, collaborative and project approaches. We regarded our
teaching experiment as such as success we decided to write it up! It may
not be a project which is rigorous in design and evaluation methodology,
but from the perspective of successful teaching, it worked.
