Solving some problems of University Education: A Case study
David Jones d.jones@cqu.edu.au
David says about himself and his research interests:
A combination of six years of teaching subjects via distance education and
a number of years in projects related to the Internet has convinced me of
the benefits that online education offers distance education. Current research
interests are in developing and using tools and teaching methods to enable
online education. A part of this is dealing with the associated problems,
benefits and trying to convince the sceptics.
He says about his paper:
From February to June 1996 one of CQU's
computing subjects has been taught entirely online. This offering included
distributing the subject's textbook via the WWW, small group collaboration
using mailing lists and assignment submission via email. The paper will
describe the problems with University education that need solving, the method
designed to address those problems, the tools used to implement it, feedback
from students and some conclusions based on the experience. Tools discussed
will include an automated system for managing the submission of assignments
via email, a map system designed to address the lost in hyperspace problem
and a system for producing a hypermedia textbook.
