Interactive multimedia is a relatively recent addition to the Web. It capitalises on the Web's capability as an educational tool for both off-campus and on-campus students. Its success will depend ultimately on improvements in audio, video and communication technologies, as well as a thoughtful approach to their applications. The first part of the paper covers the design and implementation of multimedia courseware and electric journals on the Web. The latter part of the paper examines the concerns and challenges posed by this mode of teaching and its impact on the IT infrastructure, staff and students of tertiary education institutions.
