Abstract

This paper describes the experiences at Edith Cowan University in developing and implementing an undergraduate degree in Interactive Multimedia Technologies. The paper discusses the form and structure of the program and the place of the WWW as an authoring medium. In our program, multimedia development on the WWW is treated in a single unit of study in the second semester of the second year. Our experiences have revealed a need for careful consideration of the temporal placement of such a unit within the overall program due to the array of skills and knowledge that are associated with WWW materials development and delivery.

Implementing the program has raised a number of important issues including, catering for individual differences among students, deciding on pre-requisite knowledge bases on which to develop course content, how to effectively deal with the need for all students to singularly demonstrate skills in interface, graphics and instructional design and the means by which students can be encouraged to maintain their skill levels in a field of ever changing technologies. We believe that multimedia development courses need to include instruction and skills development in WWW materials in all units describing authoring, instructional design, interface design and programming and that specialist unit(s) in WWW authoring are best placed earlier rather than later in a program to enable appropriate skills and understanding to be developed and anchored to a firm knowledge of this medium.
