Annotations: The key to collaborative teaching and learning on the Internet

Abstract

Annotations are a new and exciting way of structuring information and interaction between people on the World Wide Web. They can be used to relate a piece of text to an arbitrary position in a HTML document and this paper shows how they can be used in distance education on the Internet to create a new form of collaborative teaching and learning. In this scheme students and teachers have access to the collective knowledge of all past and present students and teachers. The scheme also allows students to take part in the development of courses and this creates courses which are more flexible and responsive to their needs.
