Hypertext and the construction of individual narratives: implications for socially constructed curriculum in primary schools

Abstract

This paper looks at some of the issues and challenges which need to be addressed as the Internet and particularly the hypertextual environment of the World Wide Web is introduced into primary schools. Recent government initiatives will enable schools to gain access to the Internet. Access to this new 'ecology of knowledge' will necessitate the development of curricula which doesn't simply integrate the Internet into the existing curriculum paradigm. The volume of information and the connectedness created by Hypertext resonates with constructivist learning theories and challenges the linear and hierarchical structure of current curriculum documents.
