Case Studies for Securing Intranet and Internet Web Servers

Abstract

The world wide web provides significant opportunities for data publishing and distribution. It makes it easy to provide large amounts of data for to a vast audience quickly and cheaply. This paper discusses some of the problems and pitfalls that were encounted in setting up web sites, and the ways in which they were overcome. ComNet Solutions has provided web site installation and configuration for a number of customers, each web installation has presented new challenges, and new approaches were required to overcome the challenges. We detail the different approaches that were taken to web server installation, from the roll-it yourself installation of a Cern or NCSA server on a Linux box, to the installation of the Netscape Commerce Server on a Sun server. We detail the methods used to allow the internal users to access the world wide web through company firewalls, and to allow external users to access the company web server.
