John says about his paper:
For some years now I've been interested in the areas of overlap in the
learning by free browsing and learner-centred approaches of
hypermedia/multimedia and the more system-imposed style implicit in
knowledge-based tutors. One part of this area is called Adaptive
Hypermedia, in which an expert's knowledge is used to structure the
learning space through the use of a student model, a representation of
student knowledge held in the system. The paper to be presented at AusWeb96
discusses the general area of adaptive hypertext and hypermedia and
specifically deals with ways that techniques in adaptive systems might be
applied to learning and information retrieval on the Web, particularly to
help solve navigational problems. I was fortunate to be able to work with
Romain Zeiliger from CNRS-IRPEACS in France on this paper. He will most
probably be coming out for the conference so I hope that he can speak about
some of his ongoing research in using concept maps to aid navigation in
hypermedia.
I think that the power of the Web as an academic networking tool is not
to be
underestimated. I have made many contacts through people who have browsed
my 95 Ausweb paper
(especially) or my home page, and I now run a special
interest group on the Web for Adaptive Hypertext and Hypermedia
(http://www.edfac.usyd.edu.au/projects/ah).
There's even a mailing list you can
join so please check it out if your interests are in this area. My other
interests include using the Web as a teaching tool, going to conferences
and working with people on publications... If you have any ideas I'm always
willing to listen."
