Abstract

This article describes benefits, applications and issues associated with the integration of World Wide Web access into CD-ROM and kiosk-based applications. The benefits of both CD-ROM and the World Wide Web are covered. The combined advantages of a hybrid CD-ROM with Web links is also explored. Particular emphasis is placed on linking to timely information from a CD-ROM and real-time interaction from a local interface.

A case study section describing projects underway at the Kennedy Space Center in the United States provides examples of real world applications that are already under development. The technologies and approaches used are discussed as well as other technologies that can perform the required tasks. The development process is outlined as well as current limitations. Future directions for the integration of Internet-based content into CD-ROM authoring development are also provided.
