WWW Navigation

One of the usability problems with WWW navigation relates to user disorientation:

"Getting lost in a display network means that the user does not have a clear conception of the relationships within the system, does not know his present location in the system, .., and finds it difficult to decide where to look next within the system." (Elm&Woods, 1985)

"It is difficult to maintain a sense of where things are in a relatively unstructured nettwork of information. ... Hypermedia exacerbates the problem of 'getting lost in information space' by providing a complex associative structure that can be traversed, but not fully visualised." (Valdez et al, 1988)
