Resolving Formal Public Identifiers on the WWW: A Proposal For Delegating SGML
Open Catalogues

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James K. Tauber jtauber@library.uwa.edu.au

James says about himself:
"As well as coordinating the CWIS at the University of Western Australia,
I maintain an active presence in both the SGML and Java worlds. Lately
I've been working on the problem of using generic SGML on the Web and, in
particular, how DSSSL and Java can best be integrated to make that a
possibility."

And about the paper:
"A key problem to be solved in the use of SGML on the Web is a way of
resolving Formal Public Identifiers (used to refer to entities in SGML)
into URLs. The SGML Open consortium already provides somewhat for this
with their catalogue system but their solution is primarily designed for
resolving FPIs to local files and doesn't scale well over the Internet. My
poster will present a simple ammendment to this catalogue system that makes
feasible the use of Formal Public Identifiers as a way of referring to
SGML documents and DTDs across the Internet. In fact, a number of people
have suggested that this proposal "is what URNs should have been". "
