Building and Intranet: Theory and Practice

Jan says about her paper:
"I'm working in both the web and videoconferencing environments at
the
moment; not as technical integrations, but rather as complementary
communication systems. I see internet based systems such as web storage
and email and computer conference systems to meet certain needs in
organisations and society, such as info storage access and guides to
resources. I see videoconferencing [128k plus ISDN type, NOT internet
based] as a rich format person-to-person/group communication form that
meets different needs in organisations, needs that are less well met in
narrow-band technologies. Horses for courses, with LOTS of different
courses!
I hope that Andrew and I can share a practical view of what happened in
our intranet project. We tried to approach the project systemically,
addressing the needs of the people rather than the whiz bang of the
technology. We worked as a partnership, him leading the development from
the context of the organisation, and me advising from a general way about
implementing a new method of communication as well as doing comparative
analysis of the tools available for their appropriateness within that
particular situation. Intranets have different design considerations than
public web sites. Our paper describes how we addressed those differences."
