Workshop Abstract
The workshop will introduce the full details of the Java language and the
tools of the Java Development Kit for the Windows95 platform. Attendees
will be able to write simple Java applets and test them with the Netscape
browser. The range of Java information and support groups on the Web will
be discussed.

About the Workshop
The workshop will provide a comprehensive introduction to the Java language,
development tools and runtime environments in browsers and stand-alone applications.
Topics covered will include:
- Java language for C and C++ programmers
- the main Java classes and object-orientation
- run-time multithreading and security
- Java user interface
- writing applets and applet demonstrations
- browser environments and protocols
- the Java Development Kit for Win95
There will be several hands-on exercises during the day with experienced
tutors on hand to offer help and advice. Several existing applets will be
examined and extended.
Attendees are assumed to have a working knowledge of C or C++ and some familiarity
with compiling and debugging. A knowledge of HTML will also be useful.

People interested in designing and developing powerful, two-way interactive
applications on the Web.
About the Workshop Presenter
The main presenter, Michael
Rees, has given many courses and workshops on Web Navigation, Web page
creation and scripting. He is currently an Associate Professor in Computing
Science in the School of Information Technology at Bond
University. Michael also participates in Web training and Web application
development with the Cooperative Research Centre for Distributed Systems
Technology at the University of Queensland. Other tutors will be drawn from
research teams under Michael's direction who are currently implementing
applets in Java.
