Interfacing Databases and the Web
ONLY A COUPLE OF PLACES LEFT!!

Adrian Vanzyl from Monash Medical Informatics and the Editor of the Business Opportunities theme at AusWeb96 will present this half day workshop. He will be reviewing the interfacing of full-scale databases and the Web including a close look at security and performance.

Audience - Anyone interested in interfacing an SQL database to the World Wide Web.

Participants will be expected to understand the principles of HTML markup, cgi interfaces, and SQL databases.

Workshop program

The workshop will consist of an overview, practical examples with source code, and discussion. There will be no hands on component.

Workshop details

This workshop will examine two popular databases, and how they may be
interfaced to the web. The first will be Microsoft Access, a popular
relational database that runs under Windows. The workshop will look at the
use of a Windows95 or NT based web server, running a Visual Basic based CGI
interface, and calling a database designed in Access. Practical details
will be discussed, including an overview of several source code samples.

The second is Oracle, an industrial strength relational database. The
workshop will examine the components required to interface a Unix based
(Solaris) Oracle database with the web. We will use the Oracle Web System
to illustrate the components required. Several practical examples of PL/SQL
code will be used to illustrate relevant concepts.

There will also be a general discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of
various approaches, security issues, and future directions. Java based
toolkits will also be discussed.

Presenter background - Dr Adrian Vanzyl

The workshop will draw on the experiences of Dr Vanzyl in setting up
databases to allow for dynamic web page construction. He has been active in
this area both in his role as a lecturer in Medical Informatics at Monash
University, and in his role as an Internet Consultant for InfoWEB, who are
currently assiting the Australian Tourism Commission to interface their
database system to the web.
