Abstract
The development of large scale websites by many authors 'happens'. Then, someone seems to find themselves having to bring organisation and aesthetic design into the existing website. This was the challenge that faced the webmaster of RMIT University by mid-1996. This paper reports some of the ways in which the many authors and digital objects have come together to form an increasingly integrated, large website which is distributed in terms of authoring, storing and discovery. It also details many of the failures inherent in such a process, either because the technologies are changing so rapidly, or because there is no shared meaning for the web. The focus of this paper is the process rather than the material itself, with changes in the website as illustrations.
