AusWeb99 - Notes for Authors
Introduction
There are two files to be loaded to our server. They are index.html and paper.html. The former page provides a quick overview of the paper and a link to the presentation -- which will be on the authors' site as well as to the full paper. The latter page is the paper that gets printed in the final proceedings.
FAQ
- Can I use my own style?
- No, please use the standard AusWeb style . We want the proceedings to have the same look and feel. If you need additional styles, define them in your own documents.
- How long should the paper be?
- Well, probably no less than 3,000 words and no more than 5,000 words, unless there is a very good reason. And please make the graphics of a reasonable size. Short papers should be no more than 3,000 words.
- Can I use Java, JavaScript, Frames
- No Java or JavaScript if you can possibly avoid it and it tells an important story for the reader. No Frames under any circumstances.
- What is the role of the presentation
- That is something that you'd want the reader to read prior to the conference. It is the equivalent of what you would ordinarily present in a traditional conference format. It can be in any format!!. Please remember that AusWeb pages live pretty much for ever. So try and keep your files in a place that can be accessed over time.
- What format for referencing do I use
- For print references, use the APA reference. See William Borst's guide to the APA style. For hypertext links, use our [HREFx] format. Put your print references first and your hypertext references second. You can see how we did this in our skeleton paper.

- Why does the AusWeb team set all these rules?
- Because we're control freaks! No, seriously, we've been in this game for some considerable time and we know what works and what doesn't work when you're trying to output to print, Web and CD-ROM. Simpler is better.
