Principle 1: Structure

A web site designer must start by structuring the information content in ways that allow for connection, interaction and interference. This principle concerns the format of a web site: the structure, sense-making, navigation and interface.
spacerA common trap for web designers is to go straight to the design of the wallpaper before walls are built or, to extend the metaphor, before doors and windows are positioned. A structure and context that shapes the content are the web site walls and the appropriate exit links are the doors and windows. As in building a house, the pattern or colour of the wallpaper becomes meaningless where there is no articulating framework.
